Rumple Zone explores the intersection of craft and computation. The installation’s form  developed via a deliberate and specific combination of hand drawn geometry and scripting. Manual interventions made during the design phase introduced directionality, grain, rhythm, and asymmetry into the piece—a counterpoint to the regular and regulated output of computational algorithms. In short, Rumple Zone’s form does not “emerge.” Instead, it is created through craft in the design process. Software tools and analog manipulation produce the ultimate formal exploration and the final fabrication.


At USC, Rumple Zone investigates a new order, one at the intersection of multiple opposing forces: organic versus computational, hand versus machine, and biological versus mechanical. The installation is constructed out of powder-coated aluminum cut into geometries that are at once the form and the structure. This structural methodology was tested in previous work. Here, the assembly reanimates a lowly corner condition and small reveal—amplifying a minor flaw in the building’s architecture.


Rumple Zone continues a series of similar investigations in the same vein, which include Three Horned Beast (and Baby Beast) and A Loose Horizon. Commissioned by The New Children's Museum in San Diego, Three Horned Beast is a 30'-foot tall pavilion that explores ideas about porosity and views. Its structural and formal characteristics act as a precedent for Rumple Zone.


A Loose Horizon, commissioned by Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA), utilized a large opening in the museum facade to establish a horizon or boundary between the gallery interior and exterior. By employing an array of metal rays projected from the museum interior, the installation emphasized the border condition and expanded the visual experience of the gallery into a spatial one.


Read together, these three projects sampled from a larger body of work, form a series of provocations that challenge the primacy of the purely digital object and set forth an embodied structural methodology.
