Work Experience —50 years’ experience in both the private and public sectors as a landscape architect and project manager. Retired 2001. Last position held: City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Served as a project manager, division supervisor, and lead project landscape architect. Since retirement: Doing business as Jerry Hastings, ASLA, a landscape architectural consulting practice.
Teaching — Taught at the University of California at Los Angeles Extension Landscape Architecture Program from 1979 to 2012; the University of Southern California 1990 and 1991; California State University at Northridge in the 1992 and 1993; the University of Southern California 2012 to present.
From 1984 to 2012 taught license preparatory workshops. These three-day workshops prepared candidates for licensure for the Landscape Architects Registration Exam (LARE). The workshops were offered through UCLA between 1984 and 2012 and independently throughout the United States from 2002 to 2012.

- LARE Review Section E Vignettes, published by Professional Publications, Inc. specifically written to prepare candidates for licensure to sit for the Grading, Drainage, and Stormwater Management Section of Landscape Architects Registration Exam.
- The Grading Book, a self-published textbook used in teaching grading, drainage, and stormwater management.
- The Book, a self-published textbook used to teach license preparatory workshops.
- Grade Easy II, coauthor of this soon to be published book on grading, drainage, and stormwater management (the Course Reader for ARCH 534 is based on this book).
