03/07/24 STUDIOS TAKE A FIELD TRIP TO THE ARROYO BRIDGE - THE FIRST STRUCTURE OF ITS KIND

On Tuesday, March 5th, three studios took a field trip to the stunning Arroyo Bridge, with David Martin hosting students and dean Brett Steele.

The multi-award winning Arroyo Bridge by Martin-Project and designed by Associate Professor of Practice R. Scott Mitchell, took the ACSA Design-Build Award, which honors the best practices in school-based design-build projects.

"It was an honor to have our students meet with architect and alumni, David Martin at the Arroyo Bridge. What began as a fabrication research studio, sponsored by Mary and David Martin, transformed into a groundbreaking project focusing on computational design and collaborative robotics,” said Scott Mitchell.

The product of a 6-year research initiative, the Arroyo Bridge is the first structure of its kind. The sculptural pedestrian span was originally conceived as a speculative project, during Mitchell’s design-build studio at the USC School of Architecture. The course challenged students to imagine a bridge that was site-specific and would respect its environment. It was then realized using a pioneering computational design and collaborative manufacturing process with humans and robots working side-by-side.

“The Arroyo Bridge is inspiring in that it was designed, and built, by USC students, alumni, and faculty. It is a wonderful educational resource and a shining example of the possibilities at USC Architecture,” said Mitchell.

Students from Mitchell’s Arch109 BSAIT Workshop, Arch 581 Digital Fabrication seminar, as well as  professor Sarah Hammond's Arch 207 Computation seminar courses attended.

A presentation about the Arroyo Bridge - "The Arroyo Bridge: Collaborative Robotics for Large-Scale Construction" by Scott Mitchell will be on Friday, March 29 at the School of Architecture.
