04/27/21 Professor Yo-ichiro Hakomori Receives Prestigious USC Associates Award for Artistic Expression

Associate Professor of Practice Yo-ichiro Hakomori has received one of this year’s two USC Associates Awards for Artistic Expression, the highest honor the University faculty bestows on its members for significant artistic impact. Hakomori was honored this month at the 40th Annual Academic Honors Convocation. The award, which includes a citation as well as a monetary prize, recognizes outstanding faculty whose artistic works have had a significant and lasting impact.

Hakomori is an architect of formidable skill and artistic talent. He is renowned for his distinguished designs, and for crafting elegant architectural space that is both beautiful and functional. His aesthetically powerful work rests in harmony with nature, advances sustainability, and draws upon the expressive possibilities of the materials he uses to build his structures.

A founder of the architectural studios wHY and StudioHAU, Hakomori has designed and built many highly regarded art museums, galleries, and single-family residences. Many of his projects highlight sustainable solutions, such as water reclamation and solar energy, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum–the world’s first LEED Gold certified art museum–and the Pomona College Studio Art Hall. The latter exemplifies how Hakomori interweaves public space throughout his buildings, inviting spontaneous interactions in transitional spaces that serve as focal points for learning and artistic expression.

As an educator-practitioner, Hakomori applies the lessons of his creative design philosophies to teaching USC Architecture students. As the leader of the USC Global Initiative study abroad program to Japan and China, he helps students expand their artistic horizons while his ideas find new ground abroad. His genial and approachable style makes him a sought-after teacher and faculty mentor and has endeared him to generations of students and colleagues at USC.
