12/15/20 Generous Alumnus Gift for Graduate Students Promotes Equal Opportunities

Warren H. Lortie, ’66, of Newport Beach, California renewed his generosity to the School of Architecture with a new major gift to support graduate student aid. The USC Architecture Alumni Fund for Student Excellence was inspired by and in response to Dean Milton S. F. Curry’s appeal for new support for graduate students. In step with USC President Carol L. Folt’s focus on graduate student aid at the University, Dean Curry outlined a major focus on creating access and affordability for our graduate students.

“Each year, our students have unmet needs related to the cost of books, materials, and supplies because their academic program disproportionately requires expensive printing and model-making material and equipment,” said Dean Curry. “To allow for equitable access and opportunity for our students, USC Architecture will invest in and expand scholarship support for graduate students. Graduate students at USC are a vital part of the University and greatly enhance both faculty-led research initiatives and classroom instruction, and we’re very grateful to Warren for his leadership gift in support of our students.”

The School of Architecture works to ensure opportunities abound for the most promising graduate students and promotes diversity within every profession and discipline. The availability of generous scholarships and fellowships to draw the world’s best students to USC will, in turn, significantly enhance the University’s transformative faculty recruitment efforts. Support for exceptional graduate students creates an environment that provides long-term benefits for faculty and students alike.

The USC Architecture Alumni Fund for Student Excellence can be supported by alumni and non-alumni alike to provide maximum impact in the current academic year.
