06/06/18 B.Arch Students Win Award at Reside Mumbai Design Competition

B.Arch students Hao Wen and Zhou Li received Director’s Choice awards in the international Reside Mumbai design competition for their “Sea Piercer” project. The spring semester in Alvin Huang’s ARCH 402 class was dedicated to developing proposals for a mixed residence development on one of the last undeveloped sections of Mumbai’s’ coastline. In response to rising sea level, seawater pollution, and population densification, the students’ project proposes an urban future enabled by a special matrix of modular housing and a system of vertical aquaculture. They situated their project in the near future, speculating Koli fishermen’s traditional way of life and their roles in society. Housing modules for Worli and Koli are embedded inside the structural matrix, which also supports a constructed ecosystem of aquaculture. Koli fishermen are transformed into fish farmers with more social mobility, while the upper-level luxury units with this unique scenery of aquaculture urbanism will attract Worli residents.
