Bob teaches ARCH 537, Urban Plant Ecology and ARCH 538, Urban Plant Ecology: California Plant Communities. He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Landscape Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and is the principal of Perry and Associates Collaborative, Landscape Architecture. Bob is a widely recognized authority regarding the landscape use of plants and water conservation for semi-arid zones. His publications are used throughout California and Mediterranean climate zones, including:
Trees and Shrubs for Dry California Landscapes. A guide to plants for water conservation. This was one of the first books for California designers providing water conservation guidelines and a comprehensive color illustrated plant compendium of species suited to Mediterranean climate regions. More than 350 plant species and 490 color illustrations are included. It received an ASLA Southern California Chapter Honor Award in 1981.
Landscape Plants for Western Regions. An illustrated guide to plants of water conservation, with1100 color illustrations of plants for landscape use in the Western United States. This book contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the sustainability of urban landscapes through conserving water and energy resources. It includes guidelines for successful plant groupings, wildlife value, controlling escaped exotic species, and the estimated water use of more than 600 plant species. It received an ASLA National Merit Award in 1993.
Landscape Plants for California Gardens. Released in 2010, this book is the most comprehensive reference to date on plants that are widely grown in landscapes throughout California and Mediterranean climates. Over 2,100 plants are described and illustrated with more than 3,100 color images. This work establishes a new standard of information regarding landscape water conservation, use of planting palettes, and presentation of individual plant profiles. It has been written to serve as a principal planting resource for planners, designers and horticulturists throughout the state. It received an ASLA Southern California Chapter Honor Award in 2011.
Bob has been a Member of the State Legislature AB 325 Water Conservation in Landscaping Task Force representing California ASLA, 1997; the AB 2717 Landscape Tasks Force representing California ASLA, 2005; was Principal Investigator of post-AB 325 impact on landscape water conservation, contracted by California Urban Water Agencies, 1999 – 2000; is a Member of the Water Use Classification of Landscape Species Task Force, University of California Cooperative Extension, 1992 – present and serves as Technical Expert for the Landscape Architects Technical Committee, California Architects Board, Sacramento, 2005 – present.
