The issue explored in the project is the question of subjective differences in a making process with the use of local materials and fabricators. The likeness of a “lawn jockey” (a cast iron figurine or concrete, historically a black man in jockey’s uniform with hand extended, used as a hitching post in front yards) will be fabricated and installed in both Los Angeles and Shanghai respectively. We intend to explore material possibilities endemic to trade between China and The West, particularly porcelain, invented in China and coveted by The West, often colloquially referred to as “China.” An artist workshop in Jingdezhen China will be compared to artist workshops in Orange County, CA.
