About our Faculty
The School has twenty-eight full-time faculty, who specialize in design, history, and technology. They teach in their area of specialty and each has a unique profile of creative work and/or scholarly research.
The numerous outstanding practitioners in the Southern California region make it possible for the School to recruit top professionals to teach in part time positions. Part time faculty bring topical and important new projects into the classroom.
Scholarship
In the last ten years, the faculty have published 91 books and hundreds of articles. Eleven faculty members currently have 27 books in progress. Faculty are represented on editorial boards of seven major journals.
Design
Faculty have won hundreds of design awards, including local, regional, national, and international design awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). They have also won design awards from Progressive Architecture, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The faculty's involvement in the community is reflected by the AIA Community Housing Assistance Honor Award, and the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award. Their work has been published in 45 national and international journals, including: Architecture, Architectural Design, Architectural Record, Architectural Review, Baumeister, Domus, Global Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Progressive Architecture. Faculty have shown their work in 111 competitions and exhibitions in the United States and abroad since 1983.
Research
Faculty are involved in active research programs in seismic design, the use of natural lighting, active and passive solar design, housing for special users (elderly, mentally and physically frail), affordable housing, urban design, architectural history, theory, and historic preservation. In this area as well, the faculty's work has been recognized by numerous awards, including awards from the AIA and Progressive Architecture.
Honors
The faculty have won many honors, including two recent Fulbright senior research awards and the AIA's Medal for Research. Three have been recognized as Distinguished Professors by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Seven have been named Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The percentage of full-time faculty in the School of Architecture who are either FAIA or ACSA Distinguished Professors is 44%, higher than any other school in the country.
Four of the faculty have won the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi award for outstanding achievement in the publication of a book. Two of the faculty have been named Fellows of the American Academy of Rome, receiving the highly respected Rome Prize from the Academy. Faculty have been honored by receiving The Maybeck award for lifetime achievement from the California Council of the American Institute of Architects, The 25 Year Award also given by the Council, the Distinguished Service Award from the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Award of Excellence from the Cultural Heritage Commission.

The Della and Harry MacDonald Dean's Chair stands as an enduring tribute to the MacDonald's outstanding leadership and commitment to USC's goals. The Dean's Chair will allow all deans to carry vital projects to fruition and to pursue the School's most important educational goals. The Chair will ensure that the vision of the School's founders, graduates, and donors is forever nurtured and strengthened.

AC Martin Visiting Professor in Architectural Design
The AC Martin Visiting Professorship in Architectural Design stands as a lasting tribute to the Martin architectural legacy, and to their outstanding leadership. The endowment funds a distinguished visiting faculty member whose teaching will instill the philosophical leadership of the various design disciplines of the architectural team and help young students uphold the ideals of the Master Builder.

MacDonald and Diane Becket Professorship in Community Design
Established by two USC alumni, MacDonald Becket and his wife, Diane BEcket, Ph.D., this professorship supports a USC School of Architecture faculty's teaching and research that explores issues in community and urban design with a special emphasis on the relationships between educational and community facilities. This professorship is permanently linked to the Diane and MacDonald Becket Professorship in Educational Governance at the USC Rossier School of Education.

Nancy M. & Edward D. Fox Urban Design Critic
A faculty endowment honoring Nancy and Edward Fox, members of a three-generation Trojan family. The Nancy M. and Edward D. Fox Urban Design Critic endowment provides funds for the annual appointment of a visiting urban design critic at the School. The critic is responsible for teaching and research in the area of urban design and the role of the business community in the development of cities. The critic incorporates the complimentary roles of architects, urban designers and financial partners in city building.

Jon Adams Jerde, FAIA Visiting Design Professor in Architecture The Jon Adams Jerde, FAIA Visiting Design Professor in Architecture honors Jon Jerde as an internationally renowned architect, urban designer, and distinguished USC Architecture alumnus. The endowment supports a visiting design studio faculty member, whose teaching will focus on the integration and collaboration of urban design, and architecture.

James N. Gamble Director of the Gamble House The James N. Gamble Director of the Gamble House continues the association of the Gamble Family name with USC and the School of Architecture, which began when James Gamble donated the house to USC and the City of Pasadena. This directorship ensures that the position is fully funded in perpetuity and that the house will continue to flourish as the result of the directors’ outstanding leadership.
