John Dutton, AIA, LEED AP, is a licensed architect and urban designer and principal of Dutton Architects. He earned his Masters of Architecture from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University. Prior to forming his own company, Dutton Architects, in 2007, he was a partner at Nicholas.Budd.Dutton. He apprenticed in the offices of Renzo Piano, Richard Meier, and Santaigo Calatrava and worked on urban design projects for Moule and Polyzoides.
Dutton has been the principal-in-charge of numerous residential projects as well as the library for the Writers Guild, the headquarters of New West Records, Opaline Restaurant, and the post-production studios of Company 3, one of the leading studios for commercial and film coloring and special effects. His work has won numerous awards and been published extensively.
Dutton authored New American Urbanism: Re-Forming the Suburban Metropolis (Skira 2001), a review and critique of the recent rise of town-planning in America. He was President of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in 1997 and 1998, and on their Board of Directors for the five years prior to that. He has written for numerous publications on architecture and urban design, served as a guest critic for many schools of architecture, and lectured worldwide.
