John Friedman Jon Adams Jerde, FAIA Visiting Design Professor in Architecture

B.S. Arch., Massachusetts Institute of Technology; M.A. in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Balliol College, Oxford University

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, John Friedman received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from MIT in 1983, where he graduated first in his class and was an NCAA Division II All-American Water Polo Player.  In 1986, as California's Newton Tatum Scholar, he received a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University's Balliol College. In 1990 he was awarded a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University.  He worked in the studio of Pritzker Laureate Alvaro Siza in 1989.

John co-founded John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (JFAK) in 1996. JFAK has been published widely and has won numerous design awards, including an AIA National Honor Award for the L.A. Design Center, AIA/LA Awards for the Ehrlich Residence and Club Sugar, and an I.D. Best of Environments Award for The Brig.  John has taught design studios at USC and SCI-Arc.

He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and partner, Alice Kimm, and their three children.
