Nabih Youssef, FASCE, SE Lecturer

Mr. Youssef is a recognized leader in structural and seismic engineering with extensive experience in academia, research, and practice. He has been published in professional periodicals and has received numerous awards for his work in the Structural Engineering field, including the Structural Engineer’s Association 2004 Structural Engineering Excellence Award, as well as the 2004 Los Angeles Conservancy “Preservation Award.” Nabih will also be featured as one of two biographical portraits in a special edition of “Tall and Special Buildings,” a monthly journal published by the UK’s John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. He has special interests in high-rise systems, urban design, and historic preservation worldwide. Mr. Youssef has also led reconnaissance efforts for lessons learned from major earthquakes around the world in Japan, China, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Egypt. His papers have been published in several engineering journals, and he frequently presents research papers at both national and international conferences. In addition, Mr. Youssef has chaired, amongst others, the State Building Standards Commission’s Seismic Safety Committee and sat on such boards as the National Science Foundation’s Panel on Seismic Research. Mr. Youssef is the principal of Nabih Youssef & Associates (NYA), now a nationally recognized structural engineering firm. NYA has worked on such projects as the Skirball Center, Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, Los Angeles City Hall, the Washington D.C. Convention Center, the Los Angeles Coliseum, and several prominent high rise buildings. The mission of his professional practice is to achieve elegant structural concepts that reinforce the comprehensive building philosophy of our urban heritage.
