Design Computation and Technology

 

Architecture has always been a technological endeavor with roots in the research of geometry, materiality, representation, the social sciences and the humanities. Critical to the profession and to architectural research is an engagement with technology and more so the directing of the innovation of new tools, techniques, methodologies, and theories for design, design delineation, and construction. Research at the intersection of design and design computation is an essential inquiry as to how architecture can better tackle the real world complexity of the cyber social physical divides for the built environment. In order to design more efficiently in terms of process we appropriated and re-tuned the use of parametric design theories for architecture for example; in order to more intelligently inform our formal aspirations we have begun to incorporate advanced computation into our design processes; these include multi-agent systems, multi-disciplinary design optimization and search, generative and evolutionary algorithms, social design, interactive architecture, and robotics and material computation to name a few. Research at the intersection of architectural design and computation and technology demands we look at the benefits and limitations and for their impact of technology on design theory, design pedagogy, and to take a critical role in the thinking and making of technologies to suit the architectural agenda and pursuits. Included in this critical research endeavor is the teaching and invention of new forms of form generation, informed by social goals, access to cutting edge fabrication technologies, novel and intelligent simulation and modeling approaches and fundamentally the incorporation of models and approaches to design problems found in engineering, computer science, material science biology, and information sciences. Through these researches issues of generative design techniques, robotics and material computation, and interactive architecture can be researched, innovated upon, and incorporated into practice.
