  RESEARCH summary
title:
Housing for the Elderly
In the Fall 2003 and Spring 2004, my research work mostly involved editing the materials from a Symposium on Housing for the Elderly held in France last summer into a monograph/book. The subject of the symposium incorporated topics such as projects of housing for the aged designed by architects in USA and Europe. The book included 13 projects selected from 8 architects. Based on the functions and layouts, these buildings could be further divided into three categories:

1) Independent Housing:
Lime House - 34 Units - John Mutlow
Residence Chenevis - 42 Units - Louis-Pierre Grosbois
Villa Flores - 75 Units - John Mutlow
Voorburg - 98 Units - Atelier Pro
Apeldoorn - 120 Units - Atelier Pro
Crescent Almere - 165 Units - Atelier Pro

2) Assisted Housing with Dementia Care:
Woodside Place - 32 Units - David Hoglund
Gradmann House - 40 Units - Sibylle Heeg
Virnanranta Kuorevirrankatu - 61 Units - Jorma Ohman
Gradmann-House Ruit - Sibylle Heeg

3) Nursing Home:
MAPA La Claire Noe Nursing Home - 47 Units - M & O, Oris
Ingwiller - 76 Units - Pascale Richter
Raymond Thomas Nursing Home - 82 Units - M & O, Oris

For each of the project, the materials are arranged in such order:
1) 3 tables of the general information of the project:
      a. General Information
      b. Characteristics of Residents
      c. Characteristics of Building

Thus to get a basic general idea of the project the book included:
2) A brief summary of the project, to get some further insight of the building.
3) 3-7 design features of the project, from overall site concepts to detailed     architectural design characters, thus to get the most distinctive and     representative ideas of the project.
4) All the words and descriptions of the three items above are accompanied     with related drawings of site plans, floor plans. Unit plans, elevations,     sections, and photos of the built ones.

The research work also included contacting all the participants of the symposium, collecting information and materials from them, and translation works. Also, my work required a lot of reading and writing, which proved to be a lot of fun.
