Computer
reconstruction of 16th century convent in Ferrara City

My GRS research work allowed me to be involved in a computer modeling the city of Ferrara. I worked on a computer reconstruction of 16th century convent. The city as a background of the convent plays an important role in terms of the whole built environment and landscape. Based on the ancient city map of Ferrara, a few drawings and text descriptions, the city is visualized through producing 2D maps, 3D models and animation films. Keeping the city model vivid and concise is the most difficult part of the modeling work. It needs the attention to both the big picture and the fine details, as well as the careful organization of every modeling process. The final 3D city model provides a grand setting for the convent by visualizing the city rivers, hills, streets, squares, gardens, monuments, churches, and houses, etc. The total number of objects counts up to 18,716. Thus, all types of animations could be easily realized by manipulating camera and target moving among the 3D models. The completed animation tours provide a rich experience for people to explore the 16th century city of Ferrara.
