"The
Middle of Where?"
|
|
| The
School of Architecture faculty member, Brian Cavanaugh, is currently exploring
the changing condition of the middle landscape. As Mr. Cavanaugh
writes:
“Our understanding of the city has traditionally depended on the relationship between its distinct domains, such as the downtown and suburb, and the in-between condition of the middle landscape. However, as our ability to affect change from remote locations through telematics and telerobotics increases, these once separate conditions have begun to collapse in on one another. The here can now be here and there simultaneously, with no apparent distance or duration between. All locales can be thought of as transitional to all other locales. Affiliations based on proximity no longer apply.” His working paper, “The Middle of Where”, looks to explore the implications of this condition on the design and life of our cities. I am assisting Mr. Cavanaugh in further development of his work in preparation for grant submissions. His research includes exploring and summarizing various articles and images that help to illustrate such changing condition and possibly forecast its future evolution. |
