The first of the MLA 3’s core design studios, this course introduces the fundamental concepts, principles and elements of landscape architectural design. The studio will begin with a unit of design exercises, which focus attention on site research, analysis and documentation, and program definition as imaginative enterprises that lay the groundwork for not only technical and sustainable excellence but also authenticity and richness in design. In this first unit students will also manipulate the fundamental formal elements of landscape architecture to complete conceptual design responses.
Building on skills and insights gained in the first unit, and in companion classes, students will work on a project of greater scale and complexity in unit two. Initially students will work in teams to complete thorough site research, analysis and documentation and program definition. From this material, students will select a particular site and program for their final project.
