What is a STARS report?
The STudent Academic Record System report (STARS) reflects students' academic progress toward degree completion of their declared majors. This report contains all USC course work and accepted transfer work that applies toward degree requirements, and may include skill level, general education, major, minor, and grade point average. Students may access their STARS reports on OASIS.
How do I get my STARS report updated?
Students may access your STARS report anytime through OASIS. The Degree Progress Department updates STARS reports at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. At times, however, students may wish to request an updated STARS report between these regularly scheduled updates, perhaps to reflect additional transfer course work accepted by USC or display recent departmental exceptions in their records. Students may request an updated STARS report through their academic advisor.
Who do I contact with questions regarding my STARS report?
Students with inquiries about STARS reports should first contact the academic advisor for assistance.
How many classes may I take on a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) basis?
Architecture students are permitted to take a maximum of 24 units of NON-architecture electives, EXCLUSIVE of WRIT 130/140, WRIT 340, MATH 108 and PHYSICS 125L on a pass/no pass basis. No more than 4 units of pass/no pass courses may be applied to General Education requirements, no more than 4 units may be taken in one semester.
What should I do if I'm considering a Leave of Absence (LOA)?
Please refer to the University’s Leave of Absence Handbook.
How do I file an extension for time to complete an incomplete (IN) grade in a class?
Arrangements for the grade of IN and its completion must be initiated by the student and agreed to by the instructor prior to the final examination. If an Incomplete is assigned as the student's grade, the instructor is required to fill out an Incomplete (IN) Completion form which specifies to the student and to the department the work remaining to be done, the procedures for its completion, the grade in the course to date, and the weight to be assigned to work remaining to be done when the final grade is computed. Both the instructor and student must sign the form with a copy of the form filed in the department.
Time Limit for Completion of Incomplete Work: Marks of IN must be removed within one calendar year from the date the assignment of the IN. If not removed within the designated time, marks of IN automatically become marks of IX (expired incomplete) with the exception of thesis, dissertation, and non letter-graded courses and are calculated in the Grade Point Average (GPA) as a grade of F.
A student may petition the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP) for an extension of time to complete an incomplete. Extensions beyond the specified time limit are rarely approved, particularly if the student has enrolled in subsequent semesters, since the removal of the incomplete should be the student's first priority.
Other IN Completion Policies and Procedures: Students may remove the IN only by completing the work not finished as a result of illness or emergency occurring after the twelfth week. Previously graded work may not be repeated for credit. It is not possible to remove an incomplete by re-registering for the course, even within the designated time.
I’ve been gone for a long time, what do I do if I want to come back to USC?
Please contact the academic advisor for reactivation procedures.
How can I transfer in a course during the summer?
Please refer to the University’s policies regarding Transferring Coursework.
What is freshman forgiveness?
A special provision governs the repeat of courses by students who enter USC as a first time freshman. These students may repeat a maximum of three courses taken during the first two semesters at USC in which grades of D+ or below (including UW and IX) were received, and only the subsequent letter grade, even if lower, will be calculated in the grade point average. The courses must be repeated at USC for a letter grade, and both courses with the grades received will appear on the transcript. The same course may be repeated no more than once for the benefit of substitution of grade. Students must notify the Degree Progress Department if they wish to utilize this provision.
What is Academic Probation?
Undergraduate students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative USC GPA falls below 2.0. Students who do not raise their cumulative GPA to a 2.0 after two semesters of subsequent enrollment (exempting summer enrollment) will be academically disqualified UNLESS they earn a minimum semester GPA of 2.3 in the second and all subsequent probation semesters.
While on probation, students must seek advisement from the architecture academic advisor, an Authorized School Signer, and an Academic Review Counselor prior to registration and before making any subsequent program changes. A Retention Advisement Record, available in the Academic Review Office (JHH 113), must be completed and signed by the architecture academic advisor and Authorized School Signer during the advisement process. In addition to this completed form, students should bring their Permit to Register or Change of Program form to the Academic Review Office to meet with a counselor for final approval.
What is SAP?
Students are required, both by federal and state financial aid guidelines as well as by USC’s financial aid policies, to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards their degrees. SAP regulations govern how many classes a student should be taking in a given semester and how many semesters of financial aid students can receive.
Detailed information about SAP and related policies can be found at the USC Admission and Financial Aid Office's website.
