Faculty Position in Historic Preservation
The University of Southern California’s School of Architecture seeks tenure track faculty in the area of historic preservation. Dean Qingyun Ma and our faculty recognize our unique potential for our School to address some of the most compelling questions in preservation today---particularly in regard to issues of the Los Angeles region, the American West, Latin America and the Pacific Rim. 

USC is an internationally recognized research university. We are searching for new faculty who are able to balance research and/or practice with the demands of teaching. Faculty specializing in the area of Historic Preservation will be expected to teach within our Masters of Historic Preservation degree program, as well perhaps in some area of our other architectural degree programs (depending on faculty’s area of specialization and credentials), including the advisement of a small set of graduate students with their thesis work.

The undergraduate program ranks in the top ten in America, offering a professional five year Bachelor of Architecture and a four year Bachelor of Science in Architecture, and boasts two Pritzker Prize Alumni, Frank Gehry and Thom Mayne.  The School of Architecture currently offers several graduate degree programs: a Master of Architecture, a Master of Building Science, a Master of Landscape Architecture, and a Master of Historic Preservation, with interdisciplinary certificates in each area. Many of our students also participate in a range of study abroad offerings in Europe and Asia. The School of Architecture launched a new PhD Program in 2008-- with an initial focus on the building sciences and technology research area. The School intends to expand into other areas of architecturally-related research over the next few years, including the area of Historic Preservation.

Requirements for the position include a graduate degree in historic preservation or architecture or the equivalent and a proven record demonstrating teaching, practice and research. Candidates with either a PhD or critical design practice with proven excellence in the area of Historical Preservation are encouraged.

Faculty Position in Sustainability
The University of Southern California’s School of Architecture seeks tenure track faculty in the area of sustainable technology and design. The School and its Dean, Qingyun Ma, wish to intensify their longstanding commitment to design excellence and technological innovation. 

USC is an internationally recognized research university located within the center of Los Angeles.  We are searching for new faculty who are able to balance research and practice with the demands of teaching within the wide spectrum of sustainability and environmental systems courses offered in our professional architectural degree programs as well as within our Building Science degree programs.   The School emphasizes the integration of both design and building technologies within each school program.  The undergraduate program ranks in the top ten in America, offering a professional five year Bachelor of Architecture and four year Bachelor of Science in Architecture, and boasts two Pritzker Prize Alumni, Frank Gehry and Thom Mayne.  The School of Architecture currently offers several graduate degree programs: a Master of Architecture, a Master of Building Science, a Master of Landscape Architecture, and a Master of Historic Preservation, with interdisciplinary certificates in each area. DIRECTOR OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE FACULTY POSITION
The USC School of Architecture is seeking a full-time faculty member to provide leadership as Director of the School’s graduate studies in landscape architecture. The appointment is for a tenured or tenure-track position depending upon the qualifications of the selected candidate and requires evidence of effective teaching and notable accomplishments in research either through academic or professional modes of inquiry. Review of applications will begin September 1, 2008 and continue until the position is filled. The appointment is intended to begin no later than Fall 2009. The initial appointment as director will be for a three-year period and may be extended.

The School’s programs focus on the strategies and design of urban and global projects that are either parts of a diverse but connected urban landscape or that address the complex issues of reclaiming and repairing sites and natural features. The Los Angeles setting especially provides the laboratory of extraordinary natural conditions and challenges, significant inter-cultural complexity, a legacy of great landscape design, and a contemporary impetus for new landscape thinking. The new faculty member must be able to provide leadership in clarifying issues critical to urban vitality and in designing initiatives for re-creating a more symbiotic urbanism in which all life can thrive.

The School of Architecture currently offers the following degree programs in landscape architecture: Master of Landscape Architecture, dual Master of Landscape Architecture/Master of Planning, and the Graduate Certificate in Landscape Architectural Studies. These programs are seamlessly related to the School’s Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, Master of Building Science, and Master of Historic Preservation degree programs, and other Graduate Certificate programs. The School has studio, research, and office space dedicated for the study of landscape architecture, a substantial library collection, extensive research and professional resources, a vital professional community in the region, and a long history of dedicated landscape architecture teaching and research in a post-professional MLA program. A first professional MLA degree program will be introduced in fall 2008 and is in the process of accreditation review.

REQUIREMENTS:
Requirements for the position include a graduate degree in landscape architecture or the equivalent. The successful candidate will be well grounded in the theory and practice of landscape architecture nationally or internationally with a focus in one or more areas of concentration such as landscape urbanism, energy efficient city design in relation to restoring and protecting natural systems, and the cultural and ecological history of landscape architecture.

These faculty positions fulfill a distinctly different role and are essential to the success of our academic unit to address emerging needs in the profession, excellence in teaching, and specific administrative responsibilities based on expertise.
